Sailing

With clean seas, little current, good weather and a range of facilities for both the competitive and recreational sailor, Cascais is a world class sailing centre. The port hosted the 2007 ISAF World Sailing Championships, while recreational sailors are well served by the marina and the Clube Naval de Cascais.

The marina has a sailing school that offers four different levels of tuition lessons according to your needs and sailing experience. Dinghy and yacht hire (crewed or un-crewed) can be arranged at the local club.

For competitive sailors, the brand new club house and facilities inaugurated in 2007 are a modern and functional infrastructure planned to host major sailing events:

• Windsurfing - On the south and east coasts, the winds are excellent for windsurfing, particularly at Guincho, where World Championship heats are held on a regular basis.
• Surfing - On both the south and east coasts, the waves are excellent for surfing, particularly at Guincho, Praia Grande and Ribeira d’Ilhas (north of Ericeira) where World Championship heats are held regularly. Surf boards can be hired at the Wind Factory.
  
• Bodyboard – The beaches at Praia Grande, Guincho and Carcavelos have big waves and are perfect for a variety of watersports including bodyboard. These beaches host a range of international competitions, as does Ribeira d’Ilhas beach in Ericeira.
  
• Funboard - On both the south and east coasts, the winds are excellent for funboard, particularly at Guincho, where World Championship heats are often held.
  
• Fishing – The varied coastline has stretches of beach, rocks and high cliffs with spectacular views. There are hundreds of places to fish from, the water is unpolluted and there is a rich variety of fish and shellfish.
  

Diving

There are facilities for scuba diving and snorkelling. The natural conditions, equipment and instructors are all excellent.

“Exclusive Divers” on Praia De Duquesa and provides equipment hire and instruction. Its staff are friendly and keen to help, praised for their professionalism and sense of fun. Dives are run twice a day from either the beach or their own RIB. Kit can be hired and is good quality.

Other watersports

• Swimming - Apart from the superb swimming pools at some of the best hotels, there are good public swimming pools, some of which are indoor and open all year round. The Estoril and Cascais seawater swimming pools are also well worth a visit.
  
• Water Ski-ing – The calmer waters of Cascais bay are ideal for waterski-ing. Watersports centres include the Cascais Sailing Club (“Clube Naval de Cascais”).
  
• Canoeing and kayaking - Throughout the region there are excellent natural conditions for a wide range of adventure sports. There are clubs and companies specialising in canoeing and kayaking on the water front in Cascais.
